The bastard sword is good for someone who plans to use it in two hands at most times, but wants the option of having a free hand to hold on to something or to use a shield. The katana is much more effective in these game stats than in reality, since GURPS allows draw-cutting slashes to penetrate even heavy metal armour, which I'd doubt in reality. Of course the non-military weapon isn't as good for a pure fighting character as the others.Īs for the longsword and the katana, one excels at swinging and the other at thrusting. The late katana is an essential part of a gentleman's outfit in certain circles, but it's not a battlefield weapon (although it was carried as a fashionable sidearm). The late katana isn't comparable to the others, any more than a mother of pearl hilted silvered revolver is comparable to an M16. Sure, the Katana and the Bastard Sword are better, but also two lbs heavier, which isn't handy if you're carefully watching encumberance. Put someone in armor (say, DR 5), and your longsword is slashed down to 2 damage, the katana cut down to 6. The Longsword averages 6 (base) which impales up to 12. A strength 14 (just grabbing a nice, rounded damage number) vs an unarmored opponent: the two-handed late katana does an average of 9 (base), which cuts up to 13. The closest is the longsword, which is weaker on the cut in the two-handed area, and that matters. Looks to me like the late katana is the lightest of the hand-and-a-halfers, weighing a mere 3 pounds. OTOH, I really like the 1.5hander concept and 'mythical' versatility. But what are the reasons for choosing each of them? To me, 1.5handers are not worth it compared to their one- or two-handed neighbors, especially given the steep default. Now, the late katana seems to suck in all respects.
